Enzo Ferrari a affirmé que la réussite commerciale de la Ferrari 308 GT4 n'a pas été obtenue non pas grâce à ses caractéristiques mécaniques de coupé 2+2 avec moteur central, mais plutôt grâce à sa ligne signée Bertone. Pour augmenter les ventes, il aurait peut-être été judicieux de confier le dessin de la voiture à Pininfarina, le carrossier habituel de Ferrari. C'est dans cette optique que la Mondial 8 est mise en vente en 1980.
